The inspirational Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is coming to Queenstown for the first time.

A collection of the world’s best mountain films will be shown at Remarkables Primary next Sunday.

The screening has been organised by New Zealand Alpine Club. Members handpicked several short films from more than eight hours of footage sent from the renowned film festival in Banff, Alberta, Canada.

The club’s Nigel Lloyd says if the evening is a success it’ll become an annual event.

“The alpine club has been running screenings around NZ for ten years.

“There are 17 now and they pretty much sell out, so it’s fair to say Queenstown has been missing out until now. Banff attracts a pretty amazing standard of films and filmmakers.”

The line-up includes 19-minute grand prize winner Cold – which charts alpinist Cory Richards’ ascent of Gasherbrum II in winter, directed and edited by Anson Fogel.

Other award winners and favourites from the 2011 festival to be shown include Towers of Ennedi, All.I.Can and Kadoma, covering rock climbing, extreme skiing and kayaking.

“Some of the films we’ve picked are a little bit dark, so we’ve tried to offset that with some more humorous or crazy out-there entertaining films as well,” Lloyd says.

“We’ve aimed for a mix that will interest, excite and inspire.”

All.I.Can:
The Short Cut. Stunning time-lapse sequences, creative visuals and imaginative skiing are highlights of All.I.Can. This excerpt from the award-winning feature film looks at both the backcountry and the back alley.

Cold.
Cold takes us to the top of Gasherbrum II in the midst of a deep, dark winter. Isolated, full of doubt and extremely exposed, these alpinists achieve the first winter ascent on one of the world’s most challenging peaks.

Kadoma.
Kadoma takes us on a suspenseful, haunting and ultimately tragic paddling expedition deep into the heart of Africa’s wildest rivers.

Reel Rock: Ice Revolution.
Journeying to a spectacular wall of vertical ice, Reel Rock: Ice Revolution joins two top ice climbers as they dodge exploding icicle bombs and send the hardest pure ice climb in the world.

Reel Rock: Sketchy Andy.
Andy Lewis is a master at extreme slacklining. Reel Rock: Sketchy Andy leaves us wondering how far he’ll go before it’ll be one step over the line.

Towers of the Ennedi.
The Towers of the Ennedi are in a hot, sand-scoured and unfriendly corner of Africa. A veteran climber and two young stars explore its untouched landscapes.
