Roads are reopening as Queenstown’s Lake Wakatipu recedes despite yesterday’s rainfall.
With lake levels sitting at 311.32m, the Queenstown Lakes District Council has removed road closures, allowing traffic through Camp, Church and Earle Streets.
Otago Regional Council environmental information and science boss John Threlfall says the Monday downpour added 15 millimetres to the Dart River catchment, feeding into Lake Wakatipu.
From midnight, the lake started to recede again and is sitting at 311.33m – down 15cm from Saturday’s peak of 311.48m above sea level.
“The next rainfall is forecast for Thursday. New modelling runs will be carried out when expected rainfall is known,” Threlfall says.
It’s unknown when the lake is expected to go down to the first flood trigger level of 310.8m.
