Menzshed gets off the ground

Russel Heckler reckons there are a few wives very much looking forward to Arrowtown’s Menzshed getting up and running.

And with a site confirmed and funds raised, that’s not too far away.

Arrowtown Menzshed chair-man Heckler says after about three years of looking, they’ve managed to secure a site at the back of the campground on Preston Drive.

There are about 100 Menzsheds around the country, providing a space for people work on small projects that are ultimately donated to the community.

“We’ve got about 30 members, although we’ve been deliberately not trying to encourage more because we haven’t had a physical space,” Heckler says.

Work will start on the build within the next two or three months. Secretary Martin Barrett says all up, the six-metre by 10-metre shed project will cost about $120,000.

That’s been massively boosted in recent week by a $54,786 grant from the Central Lakes Trust.

They’re also getting support from local businesses, he says.

And for those wondering about the name, never fear: women are welcome too, Heckler says.
