Melita Gizilis recalls watching Queenstown’s first community Christmas show and thinking, ‘I want to be in this’.
Next year she auditioned and got in, and now she’s about to sing and dance in her 10th show on December 9.
Gizilis says the show was originally more concert-based, but over the past three years it’s had more of a storyline.
In this year’s Shotover Jet Christmas Show, celebrating community heroes, she plays Nurse M, in a nod to the role nurses and doctors play in town.
“It’s a small role, just singing a song, singing a duet and just doing backing [vocals].”
Before crossing the ditch in 2007, Gizilis sang in a cabaret trio for five years and did two musicals.
In Queenstown she’s performed in several Showbiz musicals including Mamma Mia!, Annie and Les Miserables
She’s also sung with the Queenstown Jazz Orchestra and muso Lyall McGregor.
She says she loves the Christmas shows as they’re “really good fun, it’s not a stressful experience and you get up there and smile and dance and make sure you’re having fun”.
“I just think it’s really good to get into the Christmas spirit and just to be part of it.”
Though she stresses that the real stars of the show are the kids and, of course, Santa.
As she prepares for next month’s show, she admits “this might be my last just because 10’s a nice number to finish up on”.
Tickets for the December 9 shows, at 1pm and 5pm, are for sale on the show’s website and Eventfinda.
