Meet our hard-working mini-miners

These cute Queenstown Primary kids have been learning the art of perseverance while studying Queenstown’s tough gold mining days.

Pictured (from left) are five-year-olds Zoe Grant, Ollie Ruski-Jones, Stella Rind and Georgia Lane – they and the rest of their new entrants’ class have been building mini miners’ huts.

“We’ve been working on perseverance and we talked about the difficulties miners faced,” teacher Lynda Baker says.

The kids sat around a camp fire, used a billy stove and cooked damper as well as building the huts themselves from schist stones and cardboard.

Baker and a parent collected the schist whilst the kids spent about 20 minutes every day for nine days building the huts all by themselves.
