Michael Hill – and his flamboyant trousers – stole the show at yesterday’s Pro-Am tournament at his golf course.
The local jewellery magnate’s threesome won the exclusive $5000-a-team competition – put on by Open organisers Tuohy and Associates – that’s a forerunner to today’s main event.
Teamed with Colombian pro Manny Villegas – brother of golfing poster boy Camilo Villegas, NZ Golf board member Richard Taylor and NZ Golf chairman Philip Hassall, Hill won with 55 stableford points on a countback from NZ Golf II, who had Aussie pro Terry Price in their ranks.
Every NZ Open volunteer is being thanked for their time with jewels – or at least a voucher to put towards some. Hill is doling out $25 gift cards to be spent at his nationwide jewellery chain to the 300 volunteers helping at this year’s event.
