Lucky escape for locals in Lower Shotover crash

Evasive action by a Queenstown dad driving his family yesterday has prevented another road fatality from happening.

The man, who was driving his wife and daughter along Lower Shotover Road last night, had to slam on the brakes when a young male driver came flying round a corner near the Spence Road junction at 5.55pm.

“The [youth] motorist has lost control on the corner and became airborne,” senior constable Chris Blackford says.

“The motorist approaching from the opposite direction saw the airborne vehicle and managed to stop his car in time and the airborne vehicle landed on his bonnet.”

The family and the driver of the airborne vehicle, a local youth under 17, all received minor injuries from the collision, Blackford adds.

“It’s very lucky that there were no fatalities.”

Enquiries are continuing.

The accident was the second for the Wakatipu yesterday.

Argentinian woman Carolina Patron Costas, 23, died when her car veered off Malaghans Road near Arrowtown early yesterday morning and hit a poplar tree. No other cars were involved.
