This is the latest vision of a proposed Queenstown convention centre.

The photo, taken from Antrim Street above the preferred Lakeview site, owned by Queenstown Lakes District Council, has an artist’s impression of the centre inserted by architects Populous.

Populous are involved in a preferred consortium selected by council to progress a proposed $50 million, 750-person capacity centre. The consortium, led by Ngai Tahu Property and Morrison & Co – with SkyCity Entertainment Group as preferred operator – was chosen in February.

Public consultation on the proposal closes on August 31, with a two-day hearing scheduled to follow on September 3-4.

Council spokeswoman Meaghan Miller says the response to the consultation so far has been unprecedented and as of Tuesday, council had received a whopping 429 submissions.

The council won’t break down the numbers for and against until submissions close on August 31, she says.
