A New Zealander has made the top six semi-finals of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition following two rounds in Queenstown.

Aucklander Natalie Lin, 24, qualified for the finals in Auckland, starting tomorrow (Wednesday) night, along with Nikki Chooi, of Canada, Sarah Christian, of Germany, Ioana Cristine Goicea, of Romania, Wonyoung Jung, of South Korea, and Boson Mo, of Canada.

Eighteen violinists contested the first two semi-final rounds over the three days of Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

Lin, who was born of Taiwanese parents in Christchurch, has spent the past six years studying the violin in the United States and returns next month to start a doctorate at Rice University, Texas.

“I’m completely shocked and overwhelmed,” Lin said after the top six were announced last night.

Lin is only the second New Zealander to make the top six of the competiton, which has run every two years since 2001.

The first was Natalia Lomeiko, who went on to win in 2003.
