Country-singing superstar Kenny Rogers, who died last month, aged 81, had a special affinity with Queenstown.

He first visited the resort in 1973 when touring NZ with his then-band, First Edition, returning in ‘97 to perform an outdoor concert at Arrowtown’s Millbrook Resort.

He’s pictured, on the far right, taking a Shotover Jet ride during that trip – surrounding him are his driver, Scott ‘Scotty’ Clark, his fifth wife Wanda Miller, and his local friend Peter Doyle (centre), whom Rogers got to know on his first visit.

Clark says he “loved speed … he wasn’t just the slow, relaxed crooner, he had a bit of petrol in his veins”.
