Intrepid Queenstown climber Karl Johnson isn’t fooled by the warm weather atop the Remarkables – he knows the snow and ice aren’t far off.
Johnson was part of a team tackling the Queens Drive area of the Wakatipu mountain range last Saturday in blazing sunshine.
But his local climbing guide mate Chris Prudden warns the fine days on high ground are fast becoming numbered.
“Ice is forming on the shaded faces and there is an anticipation of snow that will stay as the sun gets low on the horizon and ground temperatures fall,” Prudden says.
“Our journey around the Queens Drive and back over the ridge to Lake Alta will soon require ice axes and crampons for safe travel.
