Arrowtown karate kid Anna Leat is back home after competing in a top international tournament in Japan.
The talented seven-year-old was selected to represent New Zealand at the recent event in Fukuoka, where she joined 1300 competitors from around the world.
Anna’s mum Jackie Leat accompanied her to the competition and says the youngster “performed outstandingly”.
She made the third round of the tournament and produced the second-best-equal result from the NZ team, comprised of older kids aged from nine to 15.
“Anna was really pleased with her performances and it gave her the opportunity to see the kind of standards set by the best in the world.
“She trained under three world champions in karate and got to meet four-times kata world champion Atsuko Wakai, which was a bit like hanging out with the All Black legends.”
Anna, who last year won the NZ Open in the under-eight girls’ division in Christchurch, helped raise funds for the trip by busking with her guitar around the Wakatipu.
