Japanese man dies on great NZ walk

A Japanese man in his early-sixties has died while walking one of New Zealand’s great tramps, the Milford Track.
The man, with guided walk company Ultimate Hikes, was crossing the MacKinnon Pass with a group of 31 people and three guides at about 11.20am yesterday (Sunday) when he collapsed.

Despite immediate attention and CPR, he couldn’t be revived.

Emergency services were contacted via 111 and a Search and Rescue operation was co-ordinated by Te Anau police.

The man was choppered to Te Anau where he was pronounced dead before his body taken to Invercargill.

The man was travelling alone – his next of kin are being contacted.

The matter is now in the hands of the police and the coroner.
