It’s the oom-pah Army

It was more High School Musical than M*A*S*H when the New Zealand Army Band visited Wakatipu High.

Tuba player Casey O’Sullivan (left) was one of 12 band members giving music tips to students, including 16-year-old soprano saxophonist Danielle Voschezang (right).

All musicians in the military ensemble, which was touring the region for the Festival of Colour, are required to do some soldier training – but there was no army talk on tour.

Instead the band played for the entire school at morning recess last Wednesday then ran a workshop for the 16 pupils in the senior jazz band.

“We’ve got some good musicians here but this is a jazz band that plays together all of the time and it’s good for our kids to hear that,” music teacher Alison Price says.
