Two Queenstown women are promising extra glam after securing the future of one of the resort’s biggest winter events.
The popular Gay Ski Week – which was on the brink of cancellation before eventually being held earlier this year – will now be revamped and run by Sally and Mandy Whitewoods.
The pair, who stepped in and rescued the event this July, have already confirmed dates for next year.
It will now be known as Gay Ski Week QT and be held from August 25 to September 1.
Previous organiser Mike Sanford put his event company Livewire Group into voluntary liquidation before this year’s Gay Ski Week was scheduled to begin.
Sally says she hasn’t wasted any time in getting the new-look party off the ground and is keen to make the annual event bigger and better than before.
“I’m a firm believer of getting the event organised as soon as possible.
“We’re going for a whole rebrand, a whole change – everything different. We’re trying to put our stamp on the event. It’s a new event, we’re going forward.”
The local community has got right behind the new venture and it has the backing of Australia’s best-selling magazine for gay men, DNA, Sally adds.
The couple is keen to get more business support and they’re holding an informal coffee meeting at Ballarat Trading Co bar on November 30 at 11am for interested parties.
“We really want everybody to feel part of it, even if they haven’t got big budgets. I really want the local shops to
benefit from all the people who will be coming through Queenstown.”
