A mega-bucks UK Christmas advertisement filmed in Queenstown is making an impact on the British Christmas market.
UK retail chain John Lewis, famed for big-budget Christmas commercials, flew a crew to New Zealand in July to take advantage of Queenstown’s snow season as a spectacular backdrop for a $11.6 million advertisement, British paper The Guardian reports.
Scenes from around the Wakatipu feature prominently throughout the commercial, which depicts a snowman scaling mountains, trekking across fields and crossing rivers to get to the department store to buy a gift for his snow-wife.
British road signs and telephone boxes were shipped to Queenstown to add authenticity to the production.
Within minutes of its release, the advertisement was trending on Twitter The Guardian reports. Last year’s version reached more than four million hits on YouTube.
