Inside the school of the future

Queenstown’s high-tech new high school has been revealed in greater detail.

Twenty eye-watering artists’ impressions of the planned Wakatipu High School have been released by building consortium Future Schools Partners.

They show the exterior and interior designs of the building, slated to open at Remarkables Park for the 2018 school year.

The school’s executive officer Matt Johnson says: “The exterior shots are pretty accurate now but already the internal ones are slightly out of date.

“The floor plans have changed. But the images are indicative of what the school will look like.”

The school’s working group meets with the Future Schools project team each month to review progress and discuss key design points.

The images show a 400-capacity theatre and music room, gym, labs and a ‘science garden’.

Johnson: “It’s intended to have that indoor-outdoor flow, with special furniture, so the different learning spaces can use both.

“There are so many options.”

Priority ‘add-ons’ will be a larger gym and a Maori whare, but more funding is needed.

Future Schools Partners won a $300 million contract to build four schools for the government, under the public-private partnership initiative.
