Young Queenstown dancer Joshua Swain has leaped from studio to stage after landing a role with the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
The nine-year-old St Joseph’s pupil stars as a child extra in the touring company’s nationwide show The Nutcracker in Invercargill this weekend.
Joshua, who’s been dancing ballet since he was two, auditioned in Invercargill last Sunday and has spent the entire week down south rehearsing with the company and nine other young extras before the first of three shows begin tonight.
The RNZB recruits child extras in each centre it performs at.
Mum and Danceworks ballet teacher Theresa Swain says it was her eldest son’s goal to get into The Nutcracker and he’s “over the moon” to be selected.
“It’s usually kids from the cities who get these opportunities,” she says.
“Joshua just adores being on stage. It’s his favourite place to be.”
