– Old boys of Dunedin’s John McGlashan College with Queenstown ties are doing well in the knighthood stakes. Eion Edgar was knighted four years ago, Julian Smith was cited in the last New Year’s honours list and this week John Davies joined their illustrious company in the Queen’s Birthday list.
– Anne Rodda, who runs the Michael Hill International Violin Competition, created a chuckle at the official opening last Friday. Rodda started to address mayor Vanessa van Uden as “Her Majesty” before quickly swapping it for “Her Worship”. Since the semi-finals were held here during Queen’s Birthday Weekend, though, the slip was perhaps appropriate.
- Staff at Southern Lakes Info Centre have a nice line on their outdoor blackboard since last week’s snowfall: “There’s snowhere like Queenstown.”
– Local MP Bill English always gets a laugh. After a bullish introduction by Queenstown Chamber of Commerce boss Ann Lockhart at a post-Budget breakfast last Friday, he noted: “Typical of Queenstown, it was far too optimistic – as soon as they see a chink of light, it’s suddenly sunshine.”
