Queenstown’s family support centre Happiness House is reaching out to the community with the help of the internet.
The not-for-profit organisation, which can’t afford a website, has recently set up a Facebook page thanks to the help of local woman Sofia Robinson.
A student at Otago Polytechnic’s Centre for Sustainable Practice, Robinson assisted the staff at Happiness House to create an information page on the social networking site.
It’s not a crisis support tool for families – but offers contact information for those in need of help.
“If someone needs help, most people go and Google it rather than ask around,” Robinson says.
“This is a safe information page rather than a support page.”
It also provides a “what’s on” service for locals, such as letting people know when they’ve got food available through their community market table.
“It’s fantastic – it brings us up to date with modern technology,” manager Nicki Smith says.
