Hall’s art of fundraising

Southland artist Caley Hall is donating an oil of Milford Sound at sunset to tomorrow’s annual Queenstown art auction for Wakatipu High’s Branches Camp.

Hall, whose first job was shovelling coal on Queenstown’s Earnslaw for six years, has been painting full-time for 12 years but says “I probably give more away than I sell”.

“My philanthropic mission is to help people in society through art.”

Hall says he’ll be doing even more charity artwork with the energy he’s gained through having lost 42kg since Christmas.

During tomorrow’s Branches Charitable Trust function, Hall says he’ll touch up his painting even more – “that should bring in a few more bids”.

More than 100 artworks will be for sale at tomorrow’s art auction and hors d’oeuvres evening at Queenstown Memorial Centre, starting 5.30.

Organisers hope to raise $20,000-plus for the annual Year 10 camp at remote Branches Station.

Tickets, $20 a head, will be for sale on the door.
