These Wakatipu High teens embody the message given to them at last Friday night’s Blues Awards ceremony – and they have the medals to prove it.
Pictured clockwise from left are Miranda Hayes, 17, James Aoake, 18, Taylor Rapley, 17, Emily Burns, 16, and Codie Westphall, 18 – they took out the highest honours for their sporting and cultural achievements.
Key speakers were local thespian Simon Green and triple Olympic medallist Barbara Kendall, who both delivered motivational speeches to the students and adults, organiser Laura Allen says.
“The message was to find that thing you’re passionate about and make your dreams happen.”
Hayes was awarded all-round sportswoman of the year for her performances in cross-country, touch rugby, netball and triathlon. Basketballer and rugby player Aoake got all-round sportsman, and NZ ski racing rep Rapley achieved sporting performance of the year.
Burns, who had a main role in Les Miserables this year, got most outstanding cultural performance and top design student Westphall was awarded most outstanding contribution to performing arts.
