Queenstown anglers will be happy to see these 500 rainbow trout yearlings pouring into Moke Lake from a mobile tank.
The 200 gram youngsters won’t be big enough for the hook in time for this year’s fishing season, which starts on October 1.
But on Tuesday afternoon, Otago Fish and Game ranger Steve Dixon (right) stocked Moke Lake with plenty of trout for next year.
“The fish gain weight pretty fast,” he says, “In 12 months time, this lot should be a good size for the pan.”
The yearlings were transported by road from Macraes Fish Hatchery near Palmerston in a specially-made container before being released into the water via a pipe.
“Fish and Game raise about 10,000 trout at Macraes per year and we stock various irrigation dams and ponds around Otago for anglers,” Dixon says. “I get a great satisfaction when I see the fish swimming off.”
