Golf course petition hits streets

Michelle Butters (left) puts pen to paper to help save Frankton Golf Course.

Her signature was among another 1000 collected by course supporters June and George Singleton (also pictured) who campaigned outside New World supermarket at Frankton last Friday.

“I think the course is good,” Butters says. “We live just around the corner and often pop around on a sunny Sunday.”

Queenstown Golf Club boss Michael Shattock helped gather names and says the petition is now 2000-strong.

It’ll eventually be presented to Queenstown Lakes District Council in a bid to stop the popular nine-holer being closed when its lease expires in 2012. The golf course land is earmarked for Events Centre expansion.

June Singleton says “very few” passers-by declined to sign up.
