Gay Ski Week Queenstown to be bigger and better

Record numbers of visitors are expected for next week’s annual Gay Ski Week Queenstown.

About 1000 gay men and women attended last year’s week-long event but ticket sales are running 50 per cent higher for this year’s event.

A large number of Australians and New Zealanders are expected, along from visitors from further afar.

The programme starts with an opening party at Barmuda on Saturday night.

Sunday sees the launch of Showbiz Queenstown’s musical comedy La Cage Aux Folles.

Set in a St Tropez drag-show nightclub, the award-winning Broadway musical runs for seven nights at the Queenstown Memorial Centre.

A bingo adaptation, Get it on! Bingay, sponsored by the NZ Aids Foundation, runs at The Ballarat Trading Co bar next Monday.

A glamorous Casino Royale event, in which participants are encouraged to dress up in their favourite Bond outfit, will be held at Skyline next Wednesday night.

The popular karaoke night is back at SkyCity Casino next Thursday, which will feature veteran Auckland DJ Peter Urlich who’ll also be a celebrity judge.

The penultimate function will be the Queens on the Lake party on the Earnslaw next Friday night.

The final function, on Saturday September 7, is the Heaven and Hell Dance Party at the new Vinyl Underground nightclub, formerly Subculture.

In town all week will be Mr Gay NZ and current Mr Gay World, Chris Olwage.

Local businesses are also encouraged to dress up for the Gay on the Bay competition.

“It’s awesome to see locals getting behind DNA Gay Ski Week and embracing the event,” co-organiser Sally Whitewoods says.

“Last year we were overwhelmed with the support of the local community and sponsors and this year things have gone from strength to strength.”
