Hounds wanting to take their faithful humans for a run around Gibbston have the perfect opportunity to do so next month, while raising money for fun tools to exercise their brains.

The October 4 ‘fund run’, at Gibbston, is being organised by Queenstown Dog Agility Club.

It’s not limited to just dogs and their handlers — anyone can do it, as long as they carry a soft toy in lieu of running with a K9.

The run starts from Cargo Brewery at Waitiri Creek and follows the 7km Peregrine Loop.

The $20 adult entry fee will go towards funding equipment for the agility club to host competitions.

Member Alex Nichol says currently the club has to borrow equipment or send members off to other clubs.

The 30-strong member club’s in its fourth year, and German Shepherd owner Nichol says it serves two purposes.

‘‘We’ve got two groups of people, the competitors who want to compete in agility and the other side where people want something fun to do with their dog.

‘‘It stimulates their brains … you could exercise a German Shepherd or a collie all day and they’d still be alert, but an hour of dog agility and they’re knackered.’’

The club can also give helpful tips on how to assist with obedience.

Although entries will be accepted on the day, the club’s encouraging people to register for next month’s event via Eventbrite — the link’s here.
