From zero to hero

Arrowtown wonderkid Hamish Bagley came from nowhere to snatch a surprise second place at the US snowboarding champs yesterday.

Ranked 47th in a field of 55, Hamish took silver in the under-14 or “breaker boy” class at the prestigious tournament on Copper Mountain, Colorado.

Hamish’s dad Roy says he believes his son was the only non-American in the field.

“To come out second is pretty unbelievable. I thought he’d be in about the top 15.

“It puts more into perspective all the hard work getting him there and all his training, and it’s a good thank-you to all his sponsors.”

Riders were judged on the best of two runs.

Hamish, 14, who flies home next Wednesday, has been training in Colorado with the New Zealand Winter Performance Programme 2014 team.

He’s also won gold, silver and bronze medals in regional champs over there.

Part of Wakatipu High’s NZ Alpine Sports Academy, the Year 10 student has been NZ age-group halfpipe champ for the past two years.
