Adventure tourism operator Go Orange has unveiled a new addition to its fleet – ‘Frank the Tank’.
After months of hard work to make the old combat vehicle road-legal, the company’s new 11-tonne toy might make its first public appearance at the Queenstown International Marathon this weekend.
The 1954 Alvis Saracen six-wheel ‘tank’, fitted with a Rolls-Royce engine and quality sound system, has been used in Northern Ireland and Hong Kong.
It was brought to New Zealand along with another Alvis Saracen about 25 years ago. The company bought the vehicle online.
Go Orange invested heavily in giving the vehicle a makeover, with the work being carried out by specialists in Christchurch.
The company’s transport manager and tank commander, Iain Forrest, is its designated driver.
Frank’s been driven around the resort and will be taken to local events, as well as events such as the Tall Blacks basketball match in Christchurch later this month.
