Football World Cup fundraising fever

Youngsters at Queenstown’s 82 Football Academy are in for a boost from the World Cup soccer fever that’s gripped the resort.

Academy coaches Chris Acott (left) and Richard Johnson (right) have teamed up with Pub on the Wharf manager Phil Williams to fundraise among punters watching live games from South Africa at the bar in the wee small hours.
Up for grabs in a silent auction is a signed All Whites shirt and ball.

Among other items is a pair of All Whites coach and Academy director Ricki Herbert’s football boots which are being raffled.

“The pub has been packed for some of the matches and the auction and raffle are going great guns,” Williams says. “We’ll draw the prizes on July 11, the day of the World Cup final.”

Keep the date free – the Kiwi dream is still alive after the All Whites’ last-gasp 1-1 draw in its first match against Slovakia yesterday.
