First-hand support for mums

These Queenstown women could be heroes for plenty of new mums in the resort.

The first graduates of a volunteer breastfeeding supporting training programme are (front, from left) Vicky Pollard with Charli, 2, Catkin Bartlett with Annabelle, 11 months, Debbie Townsend and (back, from left) instructor Deli Ives, Jane Hamilton with Charlotte, eight months, Krista Baker with Billy, four months, and Claudine Crabtree with Ben, 11 months.

They’ll be on hand to help other mums who are struggling to feed naturally.

The new programme, provided by Wakatipu Primary Health Organisation and Healthy Eating Healthy Action, was introduced to ease the “high need” for support, PHO spokeswoman Helen Reid says. “Breastfeeding’s not the easiest thing to do.

This is just a way of helping other women.”
