Authorities have been called to a fire blazing at the base of a Queenstown peak.
The fire started soon after 8pm at the base of Cecil Peak directly across Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown Bay.
One eyewitness from Queenstown Hill says a small boat departed from very close to where the fire started not long after and was heading at speed towards a Queenstown Bay mooring.
A local Queenstown Bay operator tells Mountain Scene police were in radio contact soon after asking if anyone could identify any boats coming into the bay.
At about 10pm the eyewitness says the flames appear to be climbing up the peak: “It’s going right through a ravine where some trees are. It’s hot, it’s taking off.”
The peak isn’t home to any houses or residents but is the site of a newly unveiled high-altitude golf tee officially opened by Prime Minister John Key last week.
