There’s been a Christmas compromise over the post office with no post boxes.
Hours before last week’s Mountain Scene hit the streets with a story about Queenstown’s post-less Post Shop, temporary boxes popped up nearby on the Camp and Ballarat Streets corner – about 15 metres from the Post Shop.
Fast work by mayor Clive Geddes gave a temporary solution to the wrangle between developer Ngai Tahu Property and Queenstown Lakes District Council which had people scratching their heads over where to mail letters.
The new boxes will probably stay where they’ve been put, Geddes says: “I’ve got sign-off from [QLDC’s] property subcommittee that that spot is appropriate and we’ll follow up with the paperwork when we’re back [at work].”
He’s surprised the boxes’ location wasn’t designed into the new Ngai Tahu complex from scratch. The developer’s Gordon Craig wasn’t available for comment.
