Queenstown’s only resthome – which helped solve the resort’s elderly care crisis – is making improvements after an audit.
The Lake Wakatipu Home & Hospital has been notified of seven “areas for improvement” after its first audit by the Ministry of Health, published on the MoH website.
Improvements ordered include giving relatives better information about patient “incidents”, updating the complaints register, additional food-safety training for staff, and “a comprehensive review of restraint practices”.
However, auditors say, “families were mostly supportive of the care provided and residents stated staff are good”.
The 36-bed establishment was formerly Presbyterian Support Services’ Wakatipu Home, adjoining Lakes District Hospital in Frankton.
Bought by Aucklanders John and Heather Rogers in April 2010, the renamed resthome has also begun taking elderly hospital-level patients.
Heather Rogers is disappointed by her resthome’s inaugural audit.
“No, it wasn’t what I was expecting,” she says.
“I’d hoped some parts of the audit were being done better.
“It’s not to say we weren’t doing it right, it’s just we’re maybe not doing it as per what the auditors would like.”
Most improvements have been made ahead of October’s deadline, Rogers says, and there’ll be a follow-up audit between then and April 2012.
