DQ deputy misses top job

The acting boss of Destination Queenstown will step back into his old role after missing out on the coveted top job.

DQ number two Graham Budd confirmed to Mountain Scene he’d applied for the post of chief executive officer, vacated by David Kennedy two months ago.

But the resort’s promotion body yesterday announced its new chief will be Sustainable Tourism Australia head honcho Stephen Pahl.

Budd has been DQ marketing manager since April 2007 and was widely thought to have been groomed for the hot seat.

He’ll step down as acting boss when Brisbane-based Pahl arrives on January 19. “I’m happy to confirm that I did apply for the job,” says Budd.

“I was asked very regularly at the beginning of the process whether I’d be applying and rather than be reticent about it, I thought it was appropriate to be upfront.”

Budd, who refuses to reveal his thoughts on missing out, now intends to take a family holiday over the festive period.

He says: “The new appointee is starting in mid-January so technically I will be acting [head] until that time.

“I’ll resume my sole responsibility of general manager of marketing in the New Year.”
