Death toll climbs Key declares national state of emergency

Christchurch, you are not alone – that’s the message from Prime Minister John Key as the official death toll from yesterday’s (Tuesday) devastating earthquake rises.

Key has just issued a statement saying police are confirming 75 fatalities, 55 of whom have been idenitified.

“There are many others missing, the status of which remains unknown.”

A national state of emergency has been declared and Key has assured Christchurch mayor Bob Parker that central Government will provide all necessary resources to help deal with the disaster.

“Today all New Zealanders grieve for you Christchurch,” Key said.

“On behalf of New Zealand let me say to all of you: We feel your pain, as only a small nation can, for none of us feel removed from this.”
