The leading lights have been named for Showbiz Queenstown’s most ambitious musical – Les Miserables.
After auditions early this month, director Doug Kamo and musical director Stuart Walker have chosen their cast for 10 performances at Queenstown’s Memorial Hall next May 13-23.
The big roles go to Simon Green, who plays Jean Valjean, and John Sear as Javert.
In support are Kathleen Brentwood (Madame Thernadier), her son Finlay (Enjolras), Marty McLay (Thernadier), Marius (Marcos Figueroa), Emily Burns (Cosette), Rachael Gerard (Fantine) and Alice Fraser (Eponine).
Three children’s roles have also been filled – Mikaela McLean and Charlie Rose rotate as Little Cosette, Angus Reid and Stephen Bartlett rotate as Gavroche and Leah Gourley plays Little Eponine.
Altogether more than 70 hopefuls auditioned for a cast of 39. The production’s still short of strong male vocalists aged 16-35 so another audition will be held on December 6-7. Rehearsals start late January.
Showbiz Queenstown’s last musical, Grease, was staged six months ago and set box office records for the musical society.
