Cut-price glamour on Sallies catwalk


Queenstown’s Salvation Army isn’t just a dedicated follower of fashion.

The local do-good organisation is using the success of tomorrow night’s second-hand fashion show to further commit to youth and old people.

The well-known annual designer clothing show acts as a promotion for the Sallies’ Shotover Street used clothing store – which has experienced a 45 per cent increase in turnover since the show began in 2008.

Trendy locals and tourists are clearing out their flash wardrobes to donate to the Sallies and plenty of bargain hunters are happy to pay more than a few dollars for quality second-hand clothes.

Bolstered profits mean the organisation has extra money to set up services to help kids and elderly.

Last November, a “senior services” arm was introduced to provide “companionship”, basic home help, referrals and advocacy for old folk – almost 50 local people are now visited weekly by two part-time Salvation Army staff, Captain Kenneth Walker says.

And in the next few months, the organisation plans to open up a youth services division, offering assistance to kids – including early school-leavers – on social issues like flatting, budgeting, faith, plus running programmes and events.

“Having a sound financial footing…means we’ve been able to go ahead and get these programmes established knowing we can go forward [for the long-term],” Walker says.

“We’re very confident that the generosity of the people of Queenstown will continue to help us [offer] these sorts of services.”

Some 90 donated garments will be modelled at the fashion show, held at Earnslaw Park, from 5.30pm.
