A Queenstowner’s innovative new potato chip flavour could land her $20,000.
Hayley Kyte’s cheesy garlic bread-tasting chips have impressed judges in the Bluebird “Do us a flavour” competition and will soon hit the shelves.
Medical recruiter Kyte’s entry was picked from more than 28,000 potential tasty snack flavours, along with butter chippin’, paua fritters with lemon wedges and Sunday roast.
Kyte says it’s exciting to reveal she’s a finalist after being sworn to secrecy since being selected in July.
“It’s nice to finally be able to tell people and try it. They sent a box of the chips to me yesterday – I’m really pleased. It’s kind of what I imagined it to be,” Kyte says.
The chips will be put to a nationwide taste-test, with the winner being decided on a combination of votes and sales – and Kyte’s got her fingers crossed she’ll nab the whopping $20,000 prize for the favourite flavour.
Things are looking hopeful, with cheesy garlic bread chips getting rave reviews on TV One’s Breakfast show, Kyte says.
“On Breakfast this morning they had all the flavours there and they were trying them and talking about their favourites.
“Everybody seemed to think that cheesy garlic bread would be the winner…so that makes me optimistic.”
Three runners-up will each take home $5000.
Kyte expects to find out whether her chips have made the cut in December – and any cash win would arrive in time for Christmas.
“I don’t want to count it all before it’s won but it’s all exciting,” Kyte says.
