The road that connects Queenstown and Wanaka will be closed overnight for the next two nights, Queenstown Lakes District Council has announced.
The Crown Range Road will close tonight (Monday) and tomorrow from 10pm-7am due to expected heavy snowfalls.
The move comes after several motorists have had to be helped by authorities in treacherous conditions after ignoring road closures and chain fitting signs on the alpine pass, QLDC transport boss Denis Mander says.
“The road is not maintained through the night and given the nature of the forecast we have taken the decision to close the road tonight and tomorrow night from 10pm to 7am,” Mr Mander said.
The situation would be assessed and extended if necessary.
“There is an alternative of travelling via Cromwell that adds only 15 minutes to the journey. At night, with snow in the forecast, we think that is a safer route for the public than an alpine pass that is not maintained overnight,” Mr Mander said.
