Secrets hidden in the depths of Lake Hayes and Lake Wakatipu are set be revealed thanks to a new piece of equipment.
Otago Regional Council (ORC) carries out regular checks of the region’s iconic lakes, but its machinery has been limited to 200m.
Now, thanks to a $60,000 investment in a new ‘sonde’ – an underwater data probe – tests and readings can be carried out as deep as 380m.
“We’re excited about seeing the results,” a council spokesman says.
Tests will be carried out at depth to find out more about changes in water quality.
Environmental monitoring officer Nathan Manning, pictured, has been testing the probe at Lake Hawea.
