Council candidates to meet public

Candidates for the upcoming local council election will speak at public meet and greet session tonight (Thursday).

The meeting – which gives voters the chance to get to know who’s standing for Queenstown Lakes District Council – takes place at Queenstown Golf Club, Kelvin Heights, from 7pm.

Voters have until October 12 to reply by postal vote – expected to be sent out today. Or votes can be lodged on October 12 at council offices till noon.

There are two candidates for the mayoralty – incumbent Vanessa van Uden and challenger Al Angus.

Fourteen candidates will contest the six Queenstown-Wakatipu ward vacancies – Al Angus, Merv Aoake, Craig Ferguson, Alexa Forbes, Mel Gazzard, Cath Gilmour, John Glover, Fiona McArthur, Warwick Stalker, Simon Stamers-Smtih, Trevor Tattersfield, Nicola Vryenhoek, Angus Welsh and Bryce Whiting.

Arrowtown ward councillor Lex Perkins is elected unopposed.

Seven candidates will contest the three Wanaka seats on the council, with five more seeking one of four positions on the Wanaka Community Board.
