Hundreds of people are expected to turn out for the fourth celebration of Diwali in Queenstown this Sunday.
The resort’s marking of the Hindu festival of lights – which symbolises the spiritual victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance – is organised by Bhartiya Samaj Queenstown.
Bhartiya Samaj member Amit Sethi says there’ll be Indian cultural performances and food, but the aim is to bring all cultures together.
“We want to involve everyone, because at the end of the day we are all one, we are human.
“It’s going to be colourful, vibrant, a great community coming together.”
The Queenstown event’s expanded rapidly, from 75 attendees in 2015 to 255 last year.
Fellow event organiser Mangal Behal says it gets “bigger and bigger every year”.
Both MP Hamish Walker and mayor Jim Boult are expected to attend the event, at Queenstown Memorial Centre from 6pm, as well as local cops and emergency service personnel.
