The winners of the zany Cocktail World Cup in Queenstown loved their week here so much they’re joking about moving over.
The triumphant Italian team of Danielle Dalla Pola, Alexander Frezzai and Luca Sai won the title during the event’s finale on Friday night – a circus-themed party under a marquee at Lake Hayes.
Team USA took second and the Scotland team came third.
Italy’s Frezzai says they were behind in the competition all week and never thought they’d win so decided on the last night to “just have a great party”.
“Our win means so much to Italy – kia ora, Queenstown, we may well move here,” Frezzai says.
The competition, sponsored by Kiwi-born vodka company 42 Below, brought more than 30 of the world’s best bartenders to Queenstown for the week, international media and two Playboy playmates.
Global booze giant Bacardi paid $138m for 42 Below in 2006 and the Cocktail World Cup has been held in Queenstown in one form or another for the past seven years.
