Church service in Portugese

Local Brazilians will be in for a treat on Sunday.

South Westland parish priest Father Michael Mahoney is celebrating Mass in Portugese at Queenstown’s St Joseph’s Catholic Church, starting 7pm.

Dunedin-born Mahoney recently spent 28 years ministering in a semi-desert state in Brazil where he started a herbal pharmacy that has saved thousands of lives, and a honey-production cooperative.
A chemistry graduate, he was the first president of the New Zealand Mountain Guides Association.

Mahoney has written a biography of Harry Ayres, a mountaineering legend who taught Mt Everest’s first conqueror, Sir Edmund Hillary, and almost reached the summit of Everest himself.

It’s thought there are about 1000 Brazilians, mostly on work permits, living in Queenstown.
