Queenstown’s Anglican Church has marked a special day on the religious calendar with an important Kiwi cause.
St Peter’s parishioners have today served up free pancakes for Shrove Tuesday to the public, asking for a gold coin donation to go towards the Christchurch earthquake fund.
Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Tuesday, is the day before Lent begins – the season of fasting and prayer in preparation for Easter. Traditionally, people used up eggs, butter and flour in the pantry before fasting began.
“We have done this for several years but this year has got the added dimension of the first anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake tomorrow,” St Peter’s Rev David Coles says.
The Church will ring its bells at 12.51pm tomorrow (Wednesday) to remember the tragedy.
