Christmas cheer has hit Queenstown with the installation of a towering Christmas tree on Village Green.
The 7.4-metre tree, soon to be decked out with all the Christmas trappings, was bought by Queenstown Lakes District Council in response to the growing number of complaints that the resort lacks Christmas spirit.
Costing $25,000, which will be spread over two years, the tree will form a central Christmas theme in Queenstown, matching the decorations on Shotover Street.
Council’s arts and events facilitator Jan Maxwell says the tree has a life span of 10 years plus, making it a good investment over time.
“In terms of duration and life span, this tree is one of the best value-for-money purchases that you can make in the decoration scheme of things,” Maxwell says.
Next year the tree will spread its Christmas cheer in Wanaka, while Queenstown will receive a second, gifted tree.
