Some $14,800 has been dished out to deserving locals by a Queenstown mental health trust that’s about to fold.
Ten groups received cheques ranging from $500-$2600 last Monday from the Remarkable People Trust, set up four years ago.
The sole remaining trustee, Queenstown chiropractor Neki Patel, was swamped with requests for funding after an appeal in Mountain Scene last month.
“I was amazed at the number of people who came forward and who are having difficulty getting funding for mental health issues in this region,” he says.
“I was delighted to be able to distribute money from the trust as I’ll soon be winding it up.”
The Wakatipu Abuse Prevention Network – which responds to issues relating to family violence – received $2600 to buy resource material.
“For us, funding is an ongoing battle,” says WAPN’s Jane Guy. “There are huge problems in Queenstown concerning the issues we deal with and this money is a really welcome boost for us.”
