Changing his tune

Queenstown Health Needs Assessment report author Chris Fraser (below), 49, has changed his spots – and views.

Mountain Scene interviewed Fraser in June 2007 as planning and funding boss of the gradually-merging Otago and Southland District Health Boards.

At the time public concern at the Wakatipu’s lack of elderly-care capacity was soaring.

Fraser’s view in 2007: “The data isn’t supporting the angst.”

His 2009 report: “In comparison to other parts of Otago and Southland, many more elderly Queenstown people will have to move to locations where secondary hospital and age-related residential care services are available.”

Fraser, after a decade in high-level public health, left the bureaucracy last year to set up his own healthcare consultancy.
