Cardrona is due to open tomorrow (Friday) while another Southern Lakes skifield, The Remarkables, has delayed its opening.
Cardrona, between Queenstown and Wanaka, has dealt with challenging weather conditions but says temperatures have dropped sufficiently to allow snow guns to make snow and build trails in the main basin and learner areas.
There was also a light dusting of snow on Tuesday.
Only the McDougall’s Quad Chairlift, Learner Conveyor and Kindy Conveyor will operate.
Cardrona is offering half-price day lift passes to reflect the limited terrain available.
There’ll be an opening party on Saturday featuring Kiwi singer-songwriter Hollie Smith.
Meanwhile, Queenstown’s The Remarkables ski area, which had been due to open on Saturday, has delayed its opening until snow cover improves.
Ski area manager Ross Lawrence says he’s determined to ensure conditions are right before unveiling the new Curvey Basin Chair, terrain improvements and sealed access road.
NZSki’s other local ski area, Coronet Peak, which opened on June 7, remains open.
