Car torched in Queenstown

Police are warning Queenstown residents to lock their cars after a vehicle was found burnt out in Sunshine Bay.

It is the second suspicious vehicle offence in the Sunshine Bay and Fernhill Rd area in recent weeks.

The torched car was found near Sunshine Bay boat ramp, off Glenorchy Rd, at 5am on Saturday.

Detective Grant Miller says: “The vehicle has been completely burnt out and a scene examination has ascertained that an accelerant was used by the offender or offenders.”

Miller says enquiries are continuing, with police attempting to identify the car’s current owner. Miller wants to hear from anyone in the area at the time or from anyone with knowledge of the matter.

“Police are encouraging residents of these areas to ensure that their vehicles are locked when unattended, especially overnight.”

Queenstown Fire attended the scene.

A silver Honda was stolen from Greenstone Place, Fernhill, a week last Tuesday night, May 26. It has since been recovered from the same area as the burnt out car.
